Charles' Diesel Pickup
« on: May 08, 2012, 08:22:21 AM »

Just got a call from Charles' wife. She said his 1995(best guess) Chevy pickup is running rough and someone told her she probably needs to replace the water/fuel filter.  Anyone have any experience working on this model? I have a few questions....

Thanks, I can send my office number if it is better to talk over the phone. Basically just wanted to discuss how a diesel mechanic would approach a situation like this. Charles was a long time member here and passed away last August. I would really like to help getting the truck running good...

Yep, it's been that long. On a side note, did they sell or keep the quad cab chevy?

i just talked to my dad about it hes not too familar with the gm line.

rough running could be cloged ingectors
is it missing like a fouled spark plug
or when you go to accelorate is it being slugish
if its being slug is it could be the water/fuel filter
my dads not sure but the water/fuel filter should be on top of the engine in the center under a plastic cover
next to the oil filter but like i said hes 100% sure with out looking at it.

if its not being slugish read the codes and see if show a miss some where
if you get any more info let me know

Thanks for the input everyone!

Tom, I am working on arranging a visit to his house where the truck is parked. I haven't seen the truck yet, so I am not sure what the problem is. Thank you very much and I will be in touch soon.

those things have a fuel/water separator that has a solenoid that may cause it to do that if it is full of water, it should have a drain valve at the bottom of the filter housing that allows you to release the water, you may want to go ahead and change that filter anyway, no telling the last time it was changed and that the most neglected filter besides the air filter.

I figured it was a good idea to replace the filter, was wondering if there is any special priming steps during filter replacement. I haven't had time to search the net yet...
