Cooling woes....
« on: May 02, 2012, 08:26:24 AM »

I think Billy's problem rubbed off on me.  Basically, last Thursday I drove the Yota from the house up to Bishops(GA Line).  ON the way back through Havana I noticed steam coming out from under the hood.  Looked down at temp gauge and it was just about to the red.  Shut it down, pulled over and let it cool off.  Added some water and thought that it must have been low, well it did it again.  The water is boiling out of the overflow bottle.

Over the weekend I took the thermostat out, tested it in boiling water and it works fine.  The thermostat on the engine is on the bottom hose instead of the top. When I was under the hood after putting the stat back in, I noticed when revving it up by hand the bottom hose collapses.  This is after the engine is warmed up.  I think the radiator has sediment built up or actually the whole cooling system.  You might remember over the winter my heater wasn't working until I flushed the heater core.

What is everybody's thoughts on this issue.  Do you think I can get by flushing the radiator the best I can and buy some NAPA coolant flush?  Or should I snatch the the radiator out and take it to someone the get it cleaned.  I did see some guys online taking it out, laying it flat and pour CLR in it and let it sit for few days...

your radiator could be partialy blocked up inside, had the same type problem on mine replaced 2 core radiator with a 3 core, on know on my year models, the diffence is a 3.0 v-6 has the 3 core and 22re has the 2 core, a new radiator from napa was around 100 bucks , you should have the same option on yours, not sure how much for a radiator shop to rod it , I just simply for ease just replaced with new one

Natty has the 2.7. I would flush the entire cooling system, clean the radiator, making sure there's no trash/mud betweent the condensor and radiator. Check your fan clutch, and if your bottom hose is collapsing, it could be restricting the water flow.

the problem sounds like the spring in the bottom rad hose is toast.

There's probably not a spring, at least not in any of the yota's I've ever had.

That's what I was thinking.

I'm gonna try the flushing the whole cooling system.

I've had Lead Foot's old 4 core radiator sitting on my back patio for over a year now. Want to try and shoe horn it in?

No spring? There's the problem! lol

Is the hose really soft? usually when there isn't a spring the hose is thick enough to take the suction.

Hey I'm a chevy guy!! What else can I say?? lol

Hey CB, is that a yota radiator or a chevy?  I may want it for my 4.3 project.

yeah, my old 428 cobrajet had em. when it rotted away I had cooling problem. stiffer, better quality hoses fix the problem. If the hose is collapsing, I'd replace it anyway.
