FJ Cruiser...too new...too shiny...gotta fix that!
« on: July 21, 2011, 08:07:35 PM »

So I bought this brand new FJ and have been trying to find time and a place to take it out and stretch it's legs.  I've also been getting into mountain biking a lot and need to find some places to take them both and and get a little muddy and scratched up.  Looking for some good challenges, but don't know where to start.  I'll have to browse around your website a bit...it seems you guys stay pretty busy.  Here's a few pics of her.  She's just too clean for an off-roader.  I've included a close-up of the modification I had to make to the back-up camera.  It's mounted right in the middle of the spare where the mounting plate for the bike rack goes.  To carry a bike, you have to sacrifice the camera...so I moved it up onto the outer arm of the rack and ran the wire through arm.

Nice!  I like the camera idea too.
Gonna need some more aggressive tread on those tires.

Did it come with factory lockers or anything?

Looking forward to seeing it in person.

There are plenty of placesin the ANF to get that FJ stuck!  If you wheel by yourself you could use the mountian bike to ride out to the nearest road :)

Scott, thanks for the Kudo's on the camera.  Factory locking diff, yes it came with a nice array of very user friendly on-board goodies.  I've been thinking of ways to improve on it, but I think the tires are a start, then I need to take it out and see what it can do.

Deffinately gonna want to stay clear of some of the narrow trails and deeper water. Other than that, there's plenty you can get into out there.

Said he wanted to tear it up and I would hate to see the repair bill on one that new.

Good job on moving the camera and hope to see you out on the trails soon.

If you have locking diffs (and they're not made of glass) then the biggest hurdle is cleared. The next thing you need is waterproofing. Find the breather tubes for everything. Engine, axles, t-case, trans, power steering, etc. and run breather tubes high up as possible. I did mine using air brake lines and fittings that I got from RACER1269. Affordable and high-q job. I'm waiting on someone to step up and smash my record for deep water fording, driving in and driving out. LoL.. Next you need clearance. 36" tires get the job done out here but 38" is best IMNSHO. If you plan on hitting the rocks with it you'll want to look at a good exo-skel but that's not necessary in the forest.

Get to work :)

I thought about one day putting my Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ on my Cruiser's frame.    8)

Isn't yours a FchevyJ?

ChucK, it would be interesting to see what the FJ can do in stock form.  Then you will have a better idea on what to upgrade first.

Technically, yes. It has a Chevy drivetrain.

Ropeman, yes, exactly what I had in mind.  I'm hoping to find something to challenge what I have and go from there.

Yes, get to work indeed. I appreciate the primer on where I might need to begin.  I think the waterproofing sounds easy enough, but I think getting that 36" might be the priority.  I'll have to get out there and get a little wet a few times to see what I'm in for.  In my mountiain biking experience/research I've found plenty of forums where people have ridden a trail and then they rate it, post pics and desribe the difficulty so you know what you're getting into.  Anyone know of a resource like that for this kind of off-roading?

Rutdggr, thanks...so what year is your FJ.  How do you rate them as off-road vehicles?
